The 2025 International Conference on Phenomenological Pedagogy (ICPP):

Towards a Thoughtful Pedagogy

April 11-14, 2025

Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China

About the Conference

The 2025 ICPP Conference aims to bring together scholars, educators, and practitioners from around the world to explore the rich potential of phenomenology in shaping contemporary pedagogy. By grounding educational practices in humanistic and phenomenological inquiry, in addition to other approaches, this conference seeks to foster a deeper understanding of education as a lived, meaningful, and relational experience, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful and reflective practices in teaching and learning. This conference will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, paper presentations, and workshops, providing a platform for participants to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaborative inquiry. It is an opportunity to connect with a global community of educators and researchers who are committed to reimagining education as a thoughtful and transformative practice.

Conference Themes

This conference invites scholars, policy makers, and educators from all fields of education to submit abstracts within one of the four conference streams:

a.Returning Lived Experience to Pedagogical Practice

Education is both an art and science. As our educational systems and research increasingly adopt abstract, instrumentalist, and technical models, we risk losing the importance of the human relationship that exists at the center of all teaching and learning. In this stream, we invite submissions that re-turn and re-center the lived experience of pedagogy and educational practice in a variety of contexts, including schools, post-secondary institutions, and child care centers.  Submissions are also welcome to share the research findings regarding new educational thoughts, teacher qualities, hidden variables of classroom teaching and learning, student narratives in lesson studies, particularly the role of phenomenology in understanding the lived experiences of learners and educators.

b.To the Things Themselves: Humanizing Technology in Education

The role of technology in education has been an ever-present question. With the rise of Generative AI and its ubiquitous presence in the lives of children and youth, we can no longer ignore or minimize the critical space occupied by the human-“thing” relationship in education. In this stream, we invite submissions that explore the relationship between technology and other “things” – both new and old – and lived experience in education.

c.Creating Educational Systems of the Future: Revisioning Educational Programs

For decades, our educational systems have been structured around the industrial model. As education gains increasing importance worldwide, we need to re-vision and re-create our educational systems. This applies to both the education we provide to children and youth, and the education we provide to those who become educators. In this stream, we invite submissions that explore new models of innovative education.

d.Exploring the Edges of Education & Fringe Pedagogy

Often, the most insightful ideas first appear as ‘fringe’ and seem to have little to do directly with pedagogy or education, but then provide important insights for phenomenological pedagogy practice. In this stream, we invite submissions that explore emerging new forms of educational and pedagogical research and practice that provoke questions about thoughtful pedagogy. Interested in the conference, but don’t see a fit with the first three streams? Consider submitting your presentation here.

Join us as we embark on this journey towards a pedagogy that honors the depth and richness of human experience, fostering a more reflective and compassionate approach to education.
