From October 26 to 27, 2024, the “Academic Symposium on Deepening the Reform of Graduate Talent Cultivation Model” was held at the International Conference Hall of Shenzhen University.
This symposium was co-organized by the Faculty of Education at Shenzhen University, the Research Institute of Talent Development Strategies for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area under the Ministry of Education, and the Bay Area Textbook Research Institute of Shenzhen University. Participants included Vice President of Shenzhen University Professor Wang Yongcheng, Dean of the Graduate School Professor Liu Yong, experts, and scholars from institutions such as the State Council Education Supervision Committee, Henan University of Technology, East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Shandong Normal University, Beijing Normal University, Tianjin Normal University, Southwest University, Renmin University of China, Southern University of Science and Technology, South China Normal University, and Guangzhou University, as well as the editors-in-chief of Academic Degrees and Graduate Education and Journal of Educational Science of Hunan Normal University. Approximately 70 attendees engaged in discussions centered on themes such as the high-quality development of graduate education, the vision of an education powerhouse, and the digital transformation of talent cultivation.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Li Chen, Party Secretary of the Faculty of Education at Shenzhen University. Professor Wang Yongcheng, Vice President of Shenzhen University, and Professor Jin Yule, Dean of the Faculty of Education, delivered opening remarks.
On the morning of October 26, seven experts delivered keynote presentations on two main themes: “Graduate Education in the Context of Building an Education Powerhouse” and “Graduate Cultivation and Teacher Education”. The sessions were chaired by Professor Li Jun, Executive Director of the Faculty of Education, and Professor Zhao Mingren, Associate Director.
Professor Wang Lisheng, National Inspector, Vice President of the China Association for Non-Government Education and Director of the Higher Education Committee, presented a report titled Advancing High-Quality Development of Graduate Education to Serve National Strength. He analyzed the new goals and missions of China’s education in the new era, offering a visionary perspective on the development pattern of graduate education under this background. Professor Liu Zhijun, Party Secretary of Henan University of Technology, discussed Reflections on Enhancing Graduate Education Quality in the Context of Building an Education Powerhouse, combining policy analysis with practical insights. Professor Fan Guorui from East China Normal University explored the topic Education Powerhouse and the Modernization of Human Development, emphasizing the transformative impact of AI on education and the importance of modernized education in fostering human progress.
Subsequent speakers included Professor Xu Jicun, Dean of the Faculty of Education of Shandong Normal University, who reflected on teaching practice from the perspectives of practical reasoning, curriculum and teaching material construction with his report Challenges and Reflections on Graduate Professional Degree Training, advocating for greater focus on practical reasoning. Professor Wang Benlu from the Faculty of Education of Beijing Normal University shared his experiences in teaching educational ethics with his report Explorations in Teaching Educational Ethical Dilemmas, offering insights into the methods he has developed with diverse and rich cases. Professor He Xuexin, Director of the Curriculum and Instruction Research Center of Tianjin Normal University, presented The Value Orientation of Teaching in the Digital Intelligence Era and Graduate Training, emphasizing the integration of AI application and governance from a humanistic perspective. Finally, Professor Liu Yibing from Southwest University addressed The Era Implications and Practical Pathways for High-Quality Teacher Education Systems, in which he explored the Chinese pathways to building such a system from various perspectives.
On the afternoon of the 26th, focusing on “High-Level Talent Cultivation”, three experts delivered presentations in turn, chaired by Associate Professor Li Penghu, Deputy Director of the Faculty of Education. Professor Zhang Jiajun, Director of the First-Class Discipline Construction Office of the Faculty of Education at Southwest University, emphasized the importance of focusing on the “entrance”, “training”, and “exit” stages in graduate education with his report Ensuring Three Key Gateways to Improve Graduate Education. By sharing the graduate training practices that have been tested at Southwest University, he provided valuable insights for other universities in talent cultivation. Associate Professor Xie Meng from Renmin University of China presented Reshaping Social Science Knowledge Systems: Cross-Disciplinary Boundaries and Excellence in Doctoral Education. Focusing on the cultivation of top-tier innovative talent at the graduate level, his discussion covered both historical and global perspectives, advocating for interdisciplinary collaboration. Professor Zhao Jianhua, Director of the Center for Future Education Research at Southern University of Science and Technology, discussed The Challenges and Opportunities of Cultivating Innovative Talent in the AI Era. He introduced various forms and applications of artificial intelligence, calling for the education sector to confront challenges, embrace change, and nurture creativity in students, with the aim of “filling the world with AI”. Following the reports, all the experts participated in themed discussions at the International Conference Hall A, further exploring the key topics of the conference.
On the morning of October 27, Chief Editor Zhou Wenhui from Academic Degrees and Graduate Education delivered a thought-provoking report on Frontiers in Graduate Education and Academic Writing, outlining 16 cutting-edge areas of research in graduate education. Chief Editor Duan Faming from Journal of Educational Science of Hunan Normal University discussed Research Topics: From Thematic, Disciplinary, to Problem-Oriented Approaches, offering in-depth insights into characteristics and path differences of three types of research. Professor Xie Yi, Head of the Curriculum and Pedagogy Department at the School of Education, Guangzhou University, presented From Practical Teaching to Embodied Learning Courses: An Integrated Approach of “Three Practices and One Training” for Professional Master’s Students, providing targeted suggestions for practice-oriented graduate programs from the perspectives of curriculum and reflective practice.
In the afternoon of the 27th, the academic session was chaired by Professor Cao Xiaoming, Deputy Director of the Faculty of Education. Professor Zhao Mingren, also Deputy Director of the Faculty of Education, delivered an academic report titled “Research on the Relationship Between Graduate Supervisors’ Educational Concepts, Guidance Styles, and Training Quality”. During the graduate student academic exchange session, five doctoral and master's students from Shenzhen University shared their research findings, sparking vibrant academic exchanges. Concluding the session, Professor Li Chen, Party Secretary of the Faculty of Education at Shenzhen University, delivered a report titled Seven Questions on Graduate Classroom Teaching, systematically analyzing and constructing the key aspects of graduate classroom teaching, including who the teaching is for, who should teach, what to teach, how to teach, where to teach, when to teach, and how to conduct the teaching. His talk inspired graduate students to reflect on and conduct research into their own learning experiences.
Professor Li Chen concluded the symposium with gratitude to all the experts and faculty members for their participation and heartfelt thanks to the students as well, along with an acknowledgment of its social and academic significance and practical value. The event’s rich discussions, high-level expertise, and extensive participation underscored its impact on advancing reforms in graduate talent cultivation models and contributed to the construction of a robust education system in China. The symposium concluded with resounding applause.
