I. About the School
The School of Teacher Development was developed on the basis of the former School of Teacher Training in Normal College of Shenzhen University, led by Professors Gao Zhihui and Li Chen in the early days.
Relying on the strong academic strength of Shenzhen University, the school focuses on basic education and professional development of teachers. It mainly carries out the online and offline training for professional development of primary school,secondary school and kindergarten teachers, and the teaching and management of full-time and part-time (in-service) masters of education. Meanwhile, it undertakes training projects of the State and Guangdong Province, and has formed five business segments: continuing education for in-service teachers in Shenzhen, public courses for teachers in Shenzhen, professional degree training for masters of education, teacher qualification interview and examination sites, and national training and special training for provincial and municipal projects. The school trains30primary school,secondary school and kindergarten teachers every year, with 166 full-time masters of education and 297 part-time masters of education by September 2022, recognized as an important cradle for the cultivation and growth of famous teachers and principals in the Pearl River Delta region,making positive contributions to the professional development of primary and secondary school teachers in Shenzhen. At present, with moral cultivation as the foundation,the school is fully implementing the new teacher team building in Guangdong Province and the demonstration requirements of “good teachers for children” in Shenzhen, and in accordance with the “project driven, platform driven, brand driven” three-step development strategy, striving to become a leading demonstration school of teacher development with advanced conditions, profound specialties, distinctive characteristics and outstanding influence.
II. Strong Subject Resources and Academic Support
The school is based on Shenzhen University. Shenzhen University has27 teaching schools, 90 undergraduate programs and more than 3,000 teachers in various subjects. There are the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts, School of Psychology,School of Physical Education and other units with normal characteristics. These subjects and disciplines directly correspond to the undergraduate, master and doctoral programs of basic education, and also extend to more than ten fields or directions of teaching for master’s degrees. In addition, Shenzhen University has set up the Institute of Education, which consists of the Bay Area Institute of Education, the Institute of Higher Education, the Research Center for Basic Education and Teacher Development, the Institute of Curriculum and Instruction, the Institute of Preschool Education, the Research Center for Intelligent Education, and the Shenzhen Institute of Family Education. Further, Shenzhen University has the Basic Education Group. This provides abundant subject resources and strong academic support for the development of the school, and also forms a good development situation of mutual support and promotion for teaching, research and training with the school, as well as pre-service and post-service integration.
III. Excellent Expert Team and Curriculum System
The school has formed a research and expert-oriented training team. It engages professors, doctoral supervisors and academicians from various schools of Shenzhen University, and also subject experts and course experts to serve as training experts. In addition,the school has hired more than 50 provincial and municipal famous principals, famous teachers, famous class advisors, and also the highestsenior, special-grade and senior teachers from primary and secondary schools to serve as continuing education lecturers, second tutors or practice instructors. The school now has 170 full-time training tutors, covering all subjects of kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, among which 25% have the highest senior titles and 70% have doctoral and master’s degrees. The training team of the school has a moderate scale, complete subjects and reasonable structure.
The school attaches great importance to curriculum construction, and has basically built a serialized and modular training curriculum system. The school has organized the special-grade teachers, the highest senior teachers and famous principals from primary and secondary schools in Shenzhen to independently developmore than 600 training courses, with nearly 300 MOOC courses already developed, and has purchased more than 200 courses from high-level colleges and universities in China. The school has a total of more than 1000 training courses, including more than 40 high-quality training courses. It has basically established a curriculum system that can meet the professional development needs of 150,000 teachers in primary and secondary schools.
The school attaches great importance to the construction of training bases and has established multi-faceted and specialized practice bases. According to the practice management mode of “complementary needs, interactive research, dual teacher guidance, mutual trust in management”, theschool has signed with a total of 21 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in Shenzhen and various districts to set up the Shenzhen University Teacher Training Off-campus Practice Base School, providing an excellent training base for cultivation and training of teachers. In addition, the school has established a number of stable partner bases in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and other cities, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as the United Kingdom, the United States and other foreign regions and countries.
IV. Beautiful Environment and Advanced Conditions
The school is located in the Yuehai Campus of Shenzhen University, which has a beautiful environment with shaded trees, flowers in all seasons, mountains and rivers set against each other. It fully enjoys the canteen, sports, transportation and other service facilities of Shenzhen University, and the training life here is convenient and safe.
The school has built 30 training classrooms (including 1 conference hall accommodating 450 persons, 1 conference hall accommodating 160 persons, 1 lecture hall accommodating 210 persons, 1 lecture hall accommodating 180 persons, and other classrooms accommodating 50-100 persons), 4 broadcast rooms (future classrooms), 11 microclassrooms, 2 language rooms and 5 comprehensive computer rooms. The school has established the Shenzhen Teacher Education Network (http://www.0755tt.com). After 15 years of development,it has realized the comprehensive network management and remote teaching platform for teachers’ continuing education supported by cloud computing, which combines the basic data, teacher training and resource sharing, with distinctive characteristics “unified portal, two systems, three platforms, four systems, five centers”, and integrates course management, personnel management, course selection management, cost management, academic affairs management, performance management, credit hour check & printing management and remote teaching management. It can offer 300 remote courses at the same time, which can meet 150,000 students’ online learning needs, and is actively realizing the simultaneous push function of PC terminal and mobile terminal courses.
V. Distinct Training Features and Models
Through years of practice and exploration, the school has formed distinct training features and models in the following aspects:
First, advanced training based on post. The school strives to combine the training process with the daily work process of students, take the post requirements as the training objectives, take all kinds of problems and difficulties in the post as the training contents, and divide the growth of teachers into the development stages of new teachers, standard teachers, key teachers, famous and excellent teachers, etc., so as to form a new training mode “based on the post, integrated into the post, and for the post”.
Second, customized training both online and offline. The school attaches importance to the sharing of high-quality online resources, and also the offline interaction and communication. It actively explores new ways of customized training featuring the integration of online and offline channels, whole-process tracking, personalized guidance, personalized growth, etc., striving to find a new path to support the professional development of teachers through information resources.
Third, professional training integrating expert guidance and independent study. The school fully respects the practical characteristics of teacher development, emphasizes teachers’ independent study on the job, and engages experts with rich practical experience and profound theoretical foundation as mentors to provide guidance throughout the whole process, for the purpose of improving together and growing continuously.
